A capacity crowd of over 200 excited fans was on hand for Saturday Nite Slam at Tropics.
To begin the evening, Commissioner Don Muraco announced that Kenjiro had been recalled back to Japan and had thus vacated the HCW Kamehameha Heritage and NWA Hawaii Heavyweight titles. Muraco also announced that a battle royal had been scheduled as the last match of the evening. The winner would be crowned the Kamehameha Heritage champion and the final four (excluding the winner) would compete on March 25 for the NWA Hawaii Heavyweight title.
Match #1: Kaniela vs. Kuroyama
Kuroyama and Kaniela went at each other in a singles match to begin the evening. For several minutes, Kuroyama's power advantage was too much for Kaniela to overcome but finally, after throwing what seemed like the kitchen sink at Kuroyama, Kaniela was finally able to knock the big man off of his feet and even land a suplex (400+ pounds!). Just as Kaniela applied Morgan's Corner in a submission attempt, Kuroyama's partner Big Daddy Frank dragged the referee out of the ring and shoved him. The referee immediately disqualified Kuroyama and called for the bell. After the decision was announced, Kuroyama, Big Daddy Frank, and manager Mr. Oki stared across the ring and pointed at the Nightmarchers and their title belts in an attempt to psyche them out for their title match later in the evening. Match #2: Kapu vs. Kaimana
Kapu was introduced first and came to the ring accompanied by the Nightmarchers. Kapu took a microphone and apologized to the fans for turning his back on them. He also called for Kaimana to come to the ring and appeared to apologize, but after Kaimana shook his hand and accepted the apology, Kapu attacked him.
No title was on the line in this match, but you wouldn't have guessed it by watching Kapu and Kaimana go after each other. Kapu overpowered Kaimana at the outset but Kaimana battled back and regained the advantage. Once Ahuna saw this, he found a metal basket that was intended for use in the street fight match later in the evening. While Kaniela distracted the referee, Ahuna slipped Kapu the basket and Kapu smashed it into Kaimana's forehead, knocking him out. The referee turned around just as Kapu covered Kaimana for the pin. Match #3: J-Lo Jody Lopez vs. J. T. Wolfen
Two of the most popular wrestlers in HCW went at each other in an awesome display. Wolfen used his strength advantage to take the early initiative but J-Lo's edge in quickness and agility allowed him to battle back. The crowd sensed an upset in the making after J-Lo landed two consecutive suplexes and was setting J. T. up for a third, but the third time wasn't the charm as Wolfen managed to block the attempt and land a mighty suplex of his own. Wolfen's adrenaline must have been running wild as he draped J-Lo up on the top rope and landed a Wolfenizer that sent J-Lo literally across the ring. After the referee counted the pin and raised Wolfen's hand in victory, Wolfen and Lopez shook hands and embraced in a show of true sportsmanship and respect. (time: 7:46, ref: Jeremy the Axe)
Commish's Wishes: Don Muraco interviews J. T. Wolfen
Commissioner Muraco asked AWA Tag Champion J. T. Wolfen what was going on in his world. Wolfen told Muraco that he was going all over the country and world looking for more gold to bring back to Hawaii. Wolfen said that he had a mainland tour scheduled for the end of the month that would include Chicago, Arizona, Rochester, and Boston. When Muraco asked about Samoa Joe, J. T. said that Kaimana was waiting for a chance to face him, but Wolfen promised gleefully and mysteriously that there was someone from Japan "just for me..."
Match #4 (Undisputed Hawaiian Tag Championship): Nightmarchers vs. 808 Hitmen
The rivalry that began with the first match of the evening continued and escalated with this match. These two teams went after each other with everything they had. For the first ten minutes, they mostly stayed within the rules but then the frustrations of not being able to finish each other off seemed to take over and all four men jumped into the ring and began pounding on each other. The referee tried in vain to restore order but once he saw that was impossible, he called for the bell and declared the match a double disqualification. Titles can only change hands on a submission or pin, so the Nightmarchers retain their titles. (time: 11:24, ref. Scott Stryker)
March #5 (Street Fight): Rockstar Ricky Thunder vs. Nightmare
It's easily an understatement to say that these two former tag partners hate each other. Ricky Thunder was constantly reminded of his hatred by the pain in his not-quite-healed knee and the brace that he wore to the ring. Nightmare's hatred comes from the Junior Heavyweight Title that he no longer holds, thanks to the Rockstar. The level of brutality of this match was incredible. Ricky Thunder completely destroyed a trash can when he powerbombed Nightmare onto it. Nightmare busted Ricky Thunder's head wide open and enjoyed watching the blood pour from the wound. Nightmare tried to cripple Ricky using the same chair and ring step that he used in January, but Rockstar was able to kick Nightmare off. Thunder got his revenge by using the chair on Nightmare's knee later in the match. After more than 20 minutes of this, Nightmare tried to set Ricky Thunder on the top turnbuckle but out of nowhere, Rockstar landed a Thunderbolt and covered Nightmare for the pin. Ricky unmasked Nightmare but Nightmare covered his face with a towel and Commissioner Muraco retrieved his mask before anyone got a good look at his face. (time: 24:12, ref. Kazz)
Match #6 (Over-the-top-rope battle royal for the HCW Kamehameha Heritage Championship and to determine the top four contenders for the NWA Hawaii Heavyweight Championship):
11 wrestlers participated in this battle royal. In order, the wrestlers eliminated were: Bushido-X, Kaniela, Kuroyama, Nightmare, Rockstar Ricky Thunder, and J-Lo Jody Lopez.
This left Ahuna, J. T. Wolfen, Kaimana, Kaniela, and Kapu. The winner will be crowned the new HCW Kamehameha Heritage Champion and the remaining four men will compete on March 25 for the NWA Hawaii Heavyweight Championship.
Kaniela, Kaimana, and Ahuna were eliminated next, so when Wolfen dumped Kapu over the top rope, J. T. Wolfen became the new HCW Kamehameha Heritage Champion!
