A record-setting crowd of NEARLY 300 was on hand for Friday Nite Slam at Tropics. Even with the extra row of chairs that was squeezed into the ringside seating area, the few scattered seats that were available wouldn't have held the groups of people who chose to stand together behind the main seating to watch the action!
To start the evening, Commissioner Muraco was met with some jeers, but he said that didn’t matter. What did matter was that Samoa Joe, the TNA X-Division Champion, was there and ready to take on Kaimana in the main event! Despite the Commissioner’s initial lukewarm reception, the fans went WILD at the mention of Samoa Joe, who gave up an opportunity to wrestle in England in order to appear at OUR Hawaii Championship Wrestling event.
1. Kenzo vs. Mr. Spa Fitness
These two wrestlers were stable mates not too long ago, so you would expect that they know how each other's wrestling styles and moves. Perhaps this is why both wrestlers introduced some new submission holds from both Mr. Spa Fitness and Kenzo. The advantage shifted from one wrestler to the other, as did the support of the crowd, who didn't "like" either of the two and seemed to just wanted to see them beat each other up. The match was fairly even until out of nowhere, Mr. Spa Fitness caught Kenzo in a vicious flying crucifix pin that Kenzo wasn't able to kick out of. (time 9:18, referee Jeremy the Axe)
2. Ativalu vs. Kaniala
Ativalu's fans were out in force this evening: though they were outnumbered by Nightmarcher supporters, Ativalu's fans made up for their numbers by loudly cheering for him from his introduction throughout the entire match. Ativalu's fans may have been what gave him the strength to survive Kaniala's expert attack.
After feeling each other out for several minutes, Kaniala landed a German Suplexes, followed by a knee lift, then a flying legdrop from the top rope nearly 3/4 the way across the ring, and followed up with two more German Suplexes, but all of that wasn't enough to win the match. Ativalu managed to pull himself together and deliver a vicious Samoan Drop. Energized, Ativalu followed it up with a People's Elbow, but it he could only hold Kaniala down for a two count.
The end came when Kaniala clamped Morgan's Corner onto Ativalu in the middle of the ring. With no leverage to escape, the ropes far away, and the pain unbearable, Ativalu was forced to tap out, giving Kaniala the submission victory. (time 12:20, referee Scott Stryker)
After the match, Kaniala's partner Ahuna helped Ativalu to his feet. Kaniala and Ativalu shook hands and embraced as a sign of mutual respect.
After Ativalu departed from the ring, Ahuna took a microphone and announced that the Nightmarchers were vacating the NWA Hawaii Tag Titles. Ahuna said that those titles had a lot of history but that the Nightmarchers weren't interested in history. Ahuna told everyone that the HCW King Kekaulike Tag Titles represented the future. The Nightmarchers handed the NWA Hawaii belts to Scott Stryker and left for the locker room.
3. J-Lo Jody Lopez vs. Big Daddy Frank
J-Lo faced Big Daddy Frank, who not only had a tremendous size and power advantage but also had fellow 808Hitman Anubis at rinside for "support." J-Lo was pumped up by the vocal support of his fans, but fan support wasn't enough to help him on any of the number of attempts he made to bodyslam (!!!) Big Daddy Frank. J-Lo was able to knock Big Daddy Frank off of his feet several times, but Frank was able to recover and started to wear J-Lo down with his size. Over and over, Frank would pound J-Lo down, but each time, amid fan chants of "Let's go J-Lo, let's go," J-Lo would pull himself up from the mat and strike back.
Just after the nine minute mark, Big Daddy Frank made a mistake that left him prone on the mat. Seeing this, J-Lo pounced on Frank and clamped on a submission arm lock. When he saw this turn of events, Anubis charged into the ring and started to pound on J-Lo. Anubis and Frank continued their attack even after the referee disqualified Big Daddy Frank and called for the bell. (time 9:13, referee Scott Stryker)
As the double-teaming continued, Ativalu charged from the locker room into the ring and chased the 808Hitmen from the ring. The Hitmen faced catcalls of "You suck" from the fans as they left for the locker room.
As J-Lo's DQ victory was being announced, Ativalu held J-Lo's hand up in victory ... then Ativalu attacked Lopez! After the second sneak-attack of the day, J-Lo was badly hurt but still managed to get back to the locker room on his own.
After the third match, Commissioner Muraco called for Kapu, who won the NWA Hawaiian Heavyweight Title the prior week, to come to the ring. Muraco asked if Kapu felt that he should be the one to face Samoa Joe because of his championship title. Kapu responded by saying that he was a REAL Hawaiian champion and that he would fight ANYONE. After a few short seconds of silence, J. T. Wolfen's music started playing and the HCW Kamehameha Heritage and AWA World Tag champion made his way to the ringside area. Wolfen said he'd take on Kapu and take the title away from him. Commissioner Muraco gave his blessing to the match, which he announced would take place after the next scheduled match.
4. (House of pain: Last man standing match) Rock Star Ricky Thunder vs. Nightmare
This match was as vicious as the streetfight match match on March 11. Nightmare focused on Ricky Thunder's back throughout the match. The slams and knees to the back began taking their toll on Thunder. Even when the Rock Star hit Nightmare, the grimace on his face as the shock waves traveled through his back made it clear that Nightmare's ingenious game plan was working.
Outside the ring, Nightmare drove Ricky Thunder's back into the side of the ring twice. Nightmare drove his steel chair into Ricky Thunder's ribs then drove Thunder's head into the chair with a DDT.
Despite this, Ricky Thunder refused to lose. Each time Nightmare ordered the referee to begin the ten count, the Rock Star managed to pull himself to his feet before the count of ten.
Nightmare threw Ricky Thunder back into the ring along with the chair. A dropkick from the top rope and a chair to the back still weren't enough to keep the Rock Star down for the ten count. Then, just as it appeared Nightmare was setting Ricky Thunder up for a reverse DDT from the second rope, Ricky Thunder landed a Thunderbolt. Both men were down as the referee started his count. Ricky Thunder managed to get to his feet a fraction of a second before the referee reached ten, but Nightmare was unable to do so from the effects of the Thunderbolt, so the referee announced Ricky Thunder as the last man standing. (time 18:35, referee Jeremy the Axe)
5. (NWA Hawaiian Heavyweight Championship) Kapu vs. J. T. Wolfen
At one time in the distant past, Kapu was the fan favorite and Wolfen the villain, but this time, Wolfen had the near-unanimous support of the fans while Kapu was scornfully being called “Shrek.”
Kapu and Wolfen went at each other with power moves, as everyone expected them to. Wolfen’s elbows softened Kapu up early on but Kapu showed why he calls himself “300% Hawaiian” by coming back and landing one of his specialty suplexes. This wasn’t enough to finish off Wolfen, so Kapu yelled “That’s it” and climbed the turnbuckles. Wolfen recovered in time to trap Kapu on the top rope, set him up, and land the Wolfenizer. This should have been the end of the match and a new title for Wolfen, but Kapu’s sidekick (who the fans were calling “Donkey”) distracted the referee just as Wolfen covered the knocked-out Kapu. Enraged, Wolfen went to the ropes to exchange taunts with Kapu’s sidekick, but this gave Kapu time to recover and get to his feet. Wolfen caught Kapu in a suplex, slammed him, and climbed the ropes for a moonsault. Just as Wolfen launched himself from the top turnbuckle, Kapu’s sidekick yanked Kapu out of the way, causing Wolfen to crash face-first into the mat. Kapu returned to the ring and hit Wolfen with a clothesline that sent both wrestlers over the top rope and onto the floor. Both were hurt and had trouble getting back into the ring. Kapu made it in before the ten count, but at the count of nine, just as Wolfen was climbing onto the apron, Kapu’s sidekick grabbed his leg, which prevented him from entering the ring. Wolfen was counted out and the referee awarded the match to Kapu. (time 9:40, referee Scott Stryker)
After the match, Wolfen grabbed a microphone and said that he would demand a rematch and would take the belt from Kapu in it.
6. (main event) “Mr. HCW” Kaimana vs. Samoa Joe
When he was announced, Kaimana entered the ring with a group of partners and performed a ceremonial dance. Samoa Joe entered the ring with his TNA X-Division Championship Belt. The looks in their eyes made it clear that both competitors were deadly serious about this match.
The match started off with some jockeying, then Samoa Joe backed Kaimana into a corner. In a true gesture of sportsmanship, Samoa Joe broke cleanly. Next it was Kaimana’s turn to back Samoa Joe into a corner, and Kaimana returned the favor. Then, the real fireworks began. The action was so intense and furious with one move and counter following another that I couldn’t begin to put it in writing (I hope a DVD is forthcoming). Both wrestlers showed off an awesome variety of offense and defense. Kaimana had Samoa Joe pinned down for 2.9 counts twice, but both times, Samoa Joe dug down deep and kicked out at the last minute. Samoa Joe also had Kaimana’s shoulders pinned to the mat several times, but Kaimana showed his intestinal fortitude by kicking out each time just before the referee counted three.
Past the ten minute mark, neither man showed any signs of slowing down, but Samoa Joe caught Kaimana in his choke sleeper. Kaimana tried to reverse or reach the ropes, but Samoa Joe’s expert application far from the ropes prevented any form of escape. Kaimana lost consciousness, so the referee awarded the submission victory to Samoa Joe. Disappointed that “Mr. HCW” didn’t win, but thrilled at the action-packed match, the fans gave both Samoa Joe and Kaimana a long ovation after his victory was announced. (time 11:04, referee Kazz)
After the applause died down, Samoa Joe grabbed a microphone and said, “HCW, welcome to professional wrestling.” Samoa Joe complimented Kaimana and called him a real man for kicking out of the muscle buster, which is something that no one else had been able to do for six years, but Samoa Joe also said that when he returns to HCW, Kaimana would have to do more than just kick out.
WOW, WHAT A NIGHT!
