A smaller-than-usual crowd of just over 50 was on hand for the February, 2007 edition of HCW's Saturday Nite Slam. The fans in attendance made up for their smaller numbers by being the most vocal since the 300+ crowd in attendance for Samoa Joe's appearance last year!
Match #1: Battle Royal
Big Daddy Frank is somewhat of an expert in HCW Battle Royals. He has won more than $20,000 in the numerous "special event" battle royals held over the years. The lack of a special cash prize didn't stop Big Daddy Frank from giving it his all, and eliminated HCW Kamehameha Heritage Heavyweight Champion Kaimana to win the match.
Elimination order: Ma Hu Wong Kamu Mr. Spa Fitness Kaniala Kaimana
After the Battle Royal, Ahuna called for Referee Jeremy the Axe and Senior Referee Kazz to join him in the ring, then addressed the crowd. He scolded both of them: Jeremy for the "stupid" thing he did at the last show (attacking Kaniala) and Kazz for allowing it to happen under his watch. Ahuna then warned Jeremy about every "charging" another wrestler, and banned him from the evening's main event: Kaniala vs. Mr. Spa Fitness for the AWA/HCW Inter-Island Championship.
Match #2: Big Daddy Frank vs. Ma Hu Wong
Big Daddy Frank gave Ma Hu Wong a brutal introduction to professional wrestling. This was a beat-down, pure and simple. Though Ma Hu had more than his share of fans in the crowd, no amount of cheers could help him overcome Big Daddy Frank's incredible size and power advantage. Just after the six minute mark, Big Daddy Frank delivered a vicious power bomb, followed up with a Big Daddy Splash, then mercifully covered Wong for the three count and a pinfall victory.
Match #3 (triple threat): Kenjiro vs. Kamu vs. Kaimana
At first, it appeared that this match would be a singles match pitting Kamu against Kaimana when Kenjiro and Mr. Oki abruptly left the ring and headed back to the locker room. They soon returned, though, and Kenjiro joined the match in progress. None of these wrestlers are friends or even allies, so this was a triple threat match in the truest sense: it was every man for himself. Just before the 12 minute mark, Kaimana was able to incapacitate Kenjiro outside the ring. As Mr. Oki tried to help Kenjiro recover, Kaimana went back into the ring then landed a Kaimana Krunch, then a frog splash on the fallen Kamu to score a pinfall victory.
After the match, Kaimana offered to shake hands with Kamu, but instead of accepting the offer of sportsmanship, Kamu slapped Kaimana's hand away.
Match #4 (main event: two out of three falls for the AWA/HCW Inter-Island Championship): Kaniala (c) vs. Mr. Spa Fitness
A two-out-of-three-falls match can help to ensure that the better man is victorious because neither man can win the match by a single stroke of luck. Ric Flair was famous for this stipulation in many of his NWA/WCW title defenses from the 1990s.
Most of this match was an excellent display of strong style wrestling at its finest. The first fall went to Kaniala and the second to Mr. Spa Fitness. That neither wrestler could dominate the other showed why they are the current and most-recent Inter-Island Champions.
It was after 23 minutes of hard fighting that the match turned ugly. Referee Kazz in the wrong place at the wrong time, and got hit by both men. Once Spa Fitness saw the referee knocked out, he got a steel chair from under the ring, but ring announcer Jeremy Strong jumped into the ring and grabbed the chair from Spa Fitness. Just as Fitness was about to retaliate, Kaniala hit him from behind, which gave Jeremy Strong the opportunity to whack Fitness over the head with the chair. When Fitness went down from the blow, Kaniala clamped on a submission hold as Jeremy Strong helped to revive the referee. Knocked out, Spa Fitness couldn't avoid the referee's three count, which gave Kaniala the third fall and successful title defense.
